Patient Assessment Methods in the Emergency Department

What is Triage?
Triage classifies patients based on the severity of their condition to prioritize treatment. It ensures efficient use of resources, especially in mass casualty incidents, aiming to save as many lives as possible.

What is CPR? (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
CPR is an emergency procedure used when the heart stops or breathing fails. “Cardio” means heart and “pulmonary” means lungs. CPR provides oxygen and tries to restart the heart for those who are unconscious or not breathing.

When is CPR Used?
About 75% of cardiac arrests happen at home. In case of heart stoppage, call emergency services (112) immediately and start CPR until help arrives. Without quick intervention, brain damage can occur within 5-10 minutes.

Importance of CPR
Performing CPR within the first 4 minutes after cardiac arrest raises survival chances by 7%. The longer the delay, the higher the risk of brain damage. Proper CPR significantly increases the patient’s chance to survive.
